Local Entertainment

Milton Keynes takes a leap forward into the millennium with the opening of the new theatre complex. The centre piece of the £30 million complex is the 1400 seat theatre with its innovative wavy roof which has been a landmark on the skyline. One of the exciting features is that the ceiling can be lowered to reduce the capacity for smaller performances. The theatre is hoping to offer a varied programme of plays, musicals, pantomime, dance and the prestigious Glyndebourne Touring Opera Company, it will also be the home of the Milton Keynes City Orchestra.

Alongside the theatre will be the Gallery, holding many exhibitions throughout the year in its three gallery spaces. With free admission, it is hoping to show a range of modern and contemporary art, as well as exhibitions on design, architecture and popular culture.

The already thriving entertainment sector inthe town includes The Stables famous music venue in Wavendon, the home of Cleo Laine and John Dankworth. Its varied programme includes many famous artists and comedians, both old and new. Other local venues such as Stantonbury Theatre and Woughton Leisure Centre offer shows from touring companies and local groups. Also MADCAP in Wolverton is host to top-flight local music groups and innovative local theatre.

We already has a multi-plex cinema at The Point and a new 16-screen cinema is being planned for the new Sports Village. There are also a number of nightclubs in the city centre, such as Dukes at the Winter Gardens complex and the Empire in the Leisure Plaza. The Sanctuary in Bletchley also has a reputation for raves.

Many pubs in the area offer music in the evenings. The Fox and Hounds and the Vaults Bar in Stony Stratford, or Zaks in Wolverton are popular nights out. On a much bigger scale, The Bowl open-air venue often offers a big-name concerts in the summer.

For something a little bit different, there are classical music and historical entertainments at Stowe Landscape Gardens near Buckingham and at Sulgrave Manor. Brackley runs a very popular annual music festival.

Many of the villages and local communities are taking up the challenge of special events throughout the millennium year. Loughton and Castlethorpe have street parties planned. There's a rumour about a Queen Boadicea's pageant in one of South Northants villages.

Bletchley Park, the home of Station X, was home to the famous codebreakers of WWII and the birthplace of modern computing and communications. It is now a heritage site and museum, with historic buildings, exhibitions and tours for visitors, community activities and non-residential conference facilities.

Exhibits include Uniforms and WWII Memorabilia, Military vehicles and fire engines, re-enactment groups, a Toy Museum and the world-famous Churchill Collection.

The Cryptology Trail enables visitors to follow a coded message from its interception to decode and interpretation. Guided Tours are free and cover the main buildings and key locations and take about one hour. Good disabled facilities.

Cycling in the area even now, nearly thirty years since it was designated as a new town, the adjective of "new" seems to attach itself naturally to every aspect of the city and its environment.

Yet the town is actually a very mature and a very varied place. For example, hand axes from the Old Stone Age (ie. nearly 10,000 BC!) period were found in Fenny Stratford.
